Wondering how fast the internet is in Thailand? We tested Wi-Fi and mobile speeds in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and more. Here’s what expats and digital nomads need to know before settling down.
Thailand has made major improvements in internet infrastructure over the past few years. Whether you're working remotely, streaming 4K content, or gaming online, you'll find decent speeds in most urban areas.
But speeds can vary widely depending on your location, provider, and type of connection (Wi-Fi vs mobile data).
We ran real-world internet speed tests across 5 major cities:
Bangkok
Chiang Mai
Phuket
Pattaya
Khon Kaen (representing Northeast Thailand)
Each city was tested using:
Fiber home internet (e.g. AIS Fibre, True Online, 3BB)
5G mobile data from AIS, True, and Dtac
Fiber Wi-Fi: 300–800 Mbps (download)
5G mobile: 150–400 Mbps (download)
Fiber Wi-Fi: 200–500 Mbps
5G mobile: 120–250 Mbps
(Note: Great for digital nomads)
Fiber Wi-Fi: 150–400 Mbps
5G mobile: 80–200 Mbps
(Note: Some areas near the beach can be spotty)
Fiber Wi-Fi: 200–600 Mbps
5G mobile: 130–300 Mbps
(Note: Best near city center)
Fiber Wi-Fi: 100–300 Mbps
5G mobile: 60–180 Mbps
(Note: Great for budget expats, but not ideal for heavy uploads)
AIS had the most consistent 5G performance across cities
True had the fastest peak speeds in Bangkok
Dtac performed well in urban areas, but slower in outskirts
Most condos and houses in cities can install fiber internet
5G coverage is widespread in major cities, perfect for on-the-go use
Internet cafes and co-working spaces are fast and reliable
If you're outside city zones, consider Starlink or mobile hotspot backups
Thailand isn’t just beautiful—it’s surprisingly well connected. Whether you're in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, you’ll enjoy some of the fastest and cheapest internet in Southeast Asia.
